Reflective High Intensity Prismatic Numbers and Letters

Reflective prismatic numbers and letters, while seemingly small and insignificant, can make a major impact, regardless of your company or industry. Despite their size, these highly-reflective markers are an ideal product for use where high visibility is required in darkened areas or at night. Their main function: to ensure a message is communicated, regardless of the light conditions. With two different grades of retroreflective numbers and letters (Engineer Grade and High Intensity Prismatic Grade), we are sure there is an application for you.

Reflective Identification Products

LEM manufactures many of its products on Retroreflective material. This highly reflective material comes in two formats: engineer grade and high-intensity prismatic grade. It allows for the reflective sign or label to appear very bright when hit directly with a light source in low-light situations or at night.

What Is Retroreflected Light?

Retroreflected light is light that is focused as a singular beam back to its source. This focused beam is more intense, so the reflected light appears brighter than the light reflected. There are two types of retroreflective light:

Specular reflection:  Smooth or mirrored surfaces such as water direct the light off into another, singular direction.

Diffuse reflection: Light reflected off a rough or uneven surface such as an asphalt road, paper, a sheetrock wall or wood floor. The reflected light is distributed in many different directions.

In order to direct light back in the direction of its source, retroreflective sheeting materials use tiny glass beads, prisms, and lenses. However, a slight variance in the direction of the light allows the viewer to see the reflective signage more clearly and from a greater distance due to the intensity of the reflected light.

Options for Retroreflective Materials

The Retroreflective sheeting materials LEM typically uses come in two formats:  Engineer grade and High-intensity Prismatic grade.

Engineer grade: This is the basic reflective sheeting. It is typically made of tiny lenses or glass beads embedded between two layers with adhesive backing that shows no visible pattern.  It can be printed on by various methods, including screen and thermal transfer. It offers a moderate visibility distance and is typically used for non-essential street signs, automobile graphics, decals and labels.

High-Intensity Prismatic grade: This type is made of two layers. The outer layer is a translucent, pigmented layer, and the inner layer contains the glass beads or optical lenses. The two layers are connected with a lattice-like pattern which resembles a honeycomb design. The sheeting can accept printing from a variety of different processes, including solvent-based inkjet, screen, and thermal transfer. Prismatic grade offers greater viewing distances. It is ideal for work zone marking, traffic signage, and general signage identification applications.

LEM manufactures a number of standard products on reflective materials including numbers and letters (in both prismatic and engineer grades), safe distance transformer labels (prismatic grade), KVA labels and voltage markers (in engineer grade only), hydrant rings (engineer grade) and parking and traffic signs (engineer and prismatic grades).  If you need custom identification products, both grades of reflective material are available from LEM.

LEM utilizes Avery-Dennison T1500 Engineer Grade reflective (equal to 3M 3200 series) as a standard and T6500 Prismatic Reflective (equal to the 3M 3930 series). Both of these options comply with ASTM D4956.

Reflective Numbers & Letters (Engineer Grade):

When high visibility is required in darkened areas or at night, engineer grade reflective numbers and letters are an excellent choice. In all markers, the optical lens elements are enclosed with a transparent resin, which has a smooth outer surface. Whether viewed in daylight or by retroreflective light at night, the sheetings are intended to have a similar appearance.

ASTM D4956 Type 1 Engineer grade reflective adhesive markers have a pressure sensitive adhesive which conforms to the adhesive requirements of FP-79 (Class 1) and LS 300C (Class 1). The material is vandal-resistant and shreds when tampered. Applications should be made at temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Reflectives have a minimum outdoor lifespan of 10 years.

Standard Legends: Numbers 0 through 9, Letters A through Z.

Character heights are 1″, 1.5″, 2.5″ and 3.75″.  Colors are White on Green, Yellow on Black, Black on Yellow, Black on White and White on Black.

Reflective Numbers & Letters (Prismatic Grade):

An ideal product for use where high visibility is required in darkened areas or at night. All markers have optical lens elements enclosed with a transparent resin that has a smooth outer surface. The sheetings are intended to have a similar appearance when viewed in the daylight or by retroreflective light at night.

All markers have a pressure sensitive adhesive which conforms to the adhesive requirements of FP-79 (Class 1) and LS 300C (Class 1).

Applications should be made at temperatures above 60 degrees Fahrenheit. These Reflectives have a minimum outdoor lifespan of-10 years.
