Reflective Labels and Safety Markers

LEM manufactures many of its reflective labels and safety markers such as numbers and letters, transformer labels and kva labels in a reflective format, specifically, on Retroreflective material. This material, which comes in two formats, allows for the reflective label or sign to appear very bright when hit with a direct light source at night or in low light situations.

How do high intensity prismatic and engineer grade retroreflective products work?

Retroreflected light is light that is directed as a singular beam back to its source. This creates an intensity of reflected light that appears brighter than light reflected in a mirror or off of a rough surface. A mirrored or smooth surface such as water, directs the light off in another, singular direction and is known as a Specular reflection. Light reflected off a rough or uneven surface such as an asphalt road, paper, a sheetrock wall or wood floor is known as Diffuse reflection, which distributes the reflected light in many different directions.

Retroreflective sheeting materials encapsulate tiny glass beads, prisms and lenses to direct the light back in the general direction of the source but with a slight variance to allow the viewer to see the reflective signage clearly. The retroreflective products allow viewers to see the sign or label from greater distances because of the intensity of the reflected light.

What types of reflective material are used?

LEM Products, Inc. produces its reflective labels and safety signs using two types of reflective materials: engineer grade and high intensity prismatic grade sheeting. These offer different reflective levels. Both types meet the standards for ASTM D4956.

Are reflective markers always visible?

As with any retroreflector, sheeting glows brightly when there is a small angle between the observer’s eye and the light source directed toward the sheeting; however, it appears nonreflective when viewed from other directions.

What are the different grades of reflective materials?

The Retroreflective sheeting materials LEM typically uses come in three formats: Engineer grade, High-intensity Prismatic grade, and Diamond grade.

Engineer Grade Reflective material typically meets ASTM D4956 Type 1 standards and is an enclosed film or lens using glass beads or prismatic optical technology.

  • Two layers with adhesive backing
  • Made of tiny glass beads or lenses
  • No visible pattern
  • Can be printed upon various methods including screen and thermal transfer
  • Moderate distance of visibility
  • Used for non-essential street signs, automobile graphics, decals, and labels
  • Meets ASTM 4659 Type 1 Class 1

High Intensity Prismatic (HIP) material meets ASTM requirement standards for D4956-09 Type III and Type IV, as well as ASTM 4956-07 Type X. It is a non-metalized micro prismatic lens reflective sheeting that is used mainly for reflective traffic and road signs, barricades or other road construction zone devices, and traffic delineators such as cones or barrels.

  • Two layers
  • Outer layer is a pigmented translucent layer
  • Inner layer contains lenses and/or glass beads
  • Layers connected with lattice-like honeycomb pattern
  • Accepts printing from screen, solvent-based inkjet, and thermal-based process types
  • Offers greater viewing distances
    Used for traffic signage, work zone marking and general signage identification
  • Meets ASTM 4659 Type 3 & 4 Class 1

Can I get a reflective decal with sequential numbering?

Are reflective magnetic signs available?

Does LEM Products, Inc. make Emergency Vehicle reflective decals?
The reflective decals and reflective signs for emergency vehicles are produced using high-quality reflective material that you see on emergency vehicles. We can print on a variety of materials, such as reflective vinyl and non-reflective vinyl. We will custom make these decals to your exact specifications.

Does LEM Products, Inc. offer warning reflectors?
Warning reflectors greatly increase the visibility of poles and other structures, both day and night, with highly reflective, highly visible aluminum-backed warning reflectors. The flexible bands are ideally suited to wrapping around utility poles, as well as marking transformer covers and other potential hazards for pedestrians and motorists.
